A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
